Title of presentation: The Effect of Preheating On a Liquid's Freezing Rate
Presenter: Caterina Arnold
Advisor: Daniel Georgiadis, PhD

Abstract:
The goal of this research project was to identify a relationship between the initial temperature of a liquid to the time it takes for the liquid to hit its freezing point. This study examines the physical principles that drive the scientific phenomenon known as the Mpemba Effect and its application in liquids other than water. The Mpemba Effect states that water with a greater initial temperature than water that is at a lower initial temperature will reach freezing given that both samples are inserted in a freezer at the same time. This project addresses the question: does the Mpemba Effect hold true for liquids other than water? It is hypothesized that milk, water, and coca-cola will hold true for the Mpemba Effect. However, after analyzing the data, the Mpemba Effect only held true for milk and water. The process for the experiment included heating or cooling the liquid to 3 different temperatures, and inserting all of the samples in the freezer at the same time. The thermocouples within each sample will measure and record the data that is used in the data analysis section. After analyzing the data, supercooling was observable in milk soda that was not boiled, but not water. Dissolved ions and gasses change the composition of the liquid, which hinders the Mpemba Effect from taking place. The data and limitations while conducting the experiment shines a light on the future research that can be done on this topic. High grade technology can drastically increase the accuracy and precision in measurements, and may lead to future applications and innovations.

Title of presentation: The worst can always be got over – Ernest Shackleton
Presenter: Jeffrey Barr
Advisor: Daniel Georgiadis, PhD

Abstract:
Sir Ernest Shackleton was an Antarctic explorer whose ship, the Endurance, became trapped in ice and the expedition to spend over two years patiently rescuing themselves.  Shackleton had the ability to inspire confidence and optimism, teamwork, and a sense of community while receiving very little papering himself. His result was the complete rescue of his crew, not a man was lost.

Shackleton’s optimism, caste-free team structure, focus on the ultimate goal, and personal connection to the crew – leadership traits that were ahead of their time – enabled the expedition to beat the odds and survive where others would have failed.  In this project we explore these leadership topics (and more) to better understand effective leadership.

Title of presentation: Karl Marx: a Cold-Hearted Commie or a Revolutionary Leader?
Presenter: Lanna Black
Advisor: Daniel Georgiadis, PhD

Abstract:
Karl Heinrich Marx was a German philosopher, sociologist, political theorist, economist, and historian born in 1818 and died in 1883. He has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and is known today as the Father of Marxism and the Father of Communism. He developed the Marxist ideology through analysis of class conflicts between the bourgeoisie (the capitalist/ruling class) and the proletariat (the working class). He proposed that, with historical materialism in mind, capitalism produced internal tension, due to its inherent instability and crisis-prone nature, that would lead to its own self-destruction and replacement with a system known as the socialist mode of production. He published about this ideology in his works The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. This research into Marx' style of leadership will use knowledge of various leadership methods to analyze how and why he became a great leader of political ideology and revolution.

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study is to examine and measure Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff’s leadership effectives during positive and negative macroeconomic conditions. The study uses leadership concepts identified in ESI-5184 Systems Engineering Leadership conducted at Florida State University. It also relies on media reports, interviews, social media, and Salesforce Web sites as the data set. This seven-week use case is a dynamic weekly real-time account of Benioff’s leadership style, framed through the lens of “then” and “now.” Results of this evaluation are qualitative and use leadership concepts, observations, anecdotal scenarios, and media accounts to determine Benioff’s leadership effectives throughout Salesforce’s history. The study is important to all business leadership; however, brings unique value to systems engineering. This is because systems engineering leadership is paramount as the world takes its first step into the fourth industrial revolution to ensure data exchanges used to connect the Internet of Things (IoT) are performed in ethical and meaningful ways. The importance of the study is magnified because it was conducted during what is arguably the most important post-pandemic earnings season for several American companies, to include Salesforce. This study intends to summarize the events of the last seven weeks, interpret what those observations mean in relationship to leadership qualities, identify limitations of the use case, and make any recommendations regarding the importance of using a contingency approach to leadership which focuses on the importance of a leader’s ability to adapt behavior based on situational conditions in order to optimize outcomes.

Title of presentation: General George S. Patton Jr: Revolutionary or Unethical Leader?
Presenter: Dustin A. Landers
Advisor: Daniel Georgiadis, PhD

Abstract:
Perhaps the most prolific tank commander in U.S. history, General George S. Patton was not only one of greatest military leaders ever produced by the United States but also one of the most complex and controversial.  Patton believed it was essential for a general to stand out and lead from the front, as he thought that no one would follow a leader that didn’t know what the work was like firsthand; or as Patton stated: “No good decision was ever made in a swivel chair.” While his leadership style was seen as unprofessional by some officers at the time, he commanded unfaltering discipline and trust from the men under his command, which allowed him to produce more results, in less time, with fewer casualties that any other general in the army during World War II. This research will attempt to breakdown his leadership style to see the factors that made him an incredible leader, while also looking at traits that may have led him to make controversial decisions.

Title of presentation: William Wallace: A Scottish Hero
Presenter: John Sebelle
Advisor: Daniel Georgiadis, PhD

Abstract:
Sir William Wallace was a Scottish knight who is one of Scotland’s greatest national heroes. William Wallace was born in 1270 near Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland, and he died in 1305 in London, England (Wallace, W.). During his youth, he became known as an outlaw to the English after he allegedly killed some Englishmen who insulted him and questioned him over the poaching of some fish (UndiscoveredScotland). It was shortly after this that the legend of William Wallace, a Scottish hero and freedom fighter, came to fruition. Wallace led many raids and battles and his passion for freedom was fueled by vengeance after the English murdered his family and wife. After Wallace’s efforts in notable battles, Wallace returned his Army home to Scotland where he was knighted and proclaimed the guardian of the kingdom (Britannica). In 1305, Wallace was captured by the English in Scotland after one of Wallace’s friends betrayed him (UndiscoveredScotland). He went to trial in Westminster Hall, where he was sentenced to death and labeled a traitor to the king. After a brutal torture and murder, his head was sent on a spike on London Bridge and his limbs put on display in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling, and Perth. Although Wallace never saw the day that the Scots gained their independence from the English, his leadership and efforts continued to rally the Scots. They eventually won their independence from England 23 years after Wallace’s death with the Treat of Edinburgh in 1328 (Wallace, W.). During Wallace’s life he portrayed many leadership qualities, and many of the lessons learned will be applied to the author’s personal career as a Systems Engineer.

Abstract:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also known as FDR, was the 32nd president of the United States of America. He served as president from 1933 until his death in 1945. FDR was the first, and only, president to serve more than two terms. The election in 1936 resulted in FDR winning 60.8 percent of the popular vote and only two states not going his way. This victory is the largest in US election history. His reelection for a third consecutive term came at a time of world turmoil as World War II had begun. FDR went on to win his 4th presidential election in 1944 receiving 53.5 percent of the popular vote and 37 states. FDR’s leadership through the Great Depression and World War II kept the nation as stable as could be expected, allowed him to be continuously reelected, and cemented his position as one of the greatest leaders in history. This paper delves into the characteristics, traits, and other factors that led to FDR’s success as a leader.

The United States Air Force fighter fleet has withgone several changes over the last few decades. The introduction of the F-22 and F-35 systems as a replacement for the 1970s and 1980s era F-15 and F-16 aircraft has sparked many of these changes. However, with the F-22 platform being cut short at 186 aircraft, and the cost overruns of the F-35 platform, officials set their eyes on a cheaper sustainable solution. This paper explores the needs of the Air Force that is driving the decision to procure updated F-15EX model aircraft. This will be conducted by looking at the system engineering decisions that led to the need to extend the F-15 lifecycle. This study aims to address three hypotheses: continued use of the F-35 consumes less resources than the F-15EX; Development of a low-cost munition mule would be cheaper in the long run; The F-15EX provides a temporary buffer to the aging fleet before the implementation of 6th generation aircraft. The hypotheses introduced will be addressed using direct questions including: What benefit does the F-15EX have over the F-35? How has the reduction of F-22 procurement effected the need for the F-15EX? Should a new, cheaper aircraft have been developed?

Title of presentation: A Case Study in the Use of MBSE for a Drone-Based  Wildlife Management System
Presenter: Frederick E. Bass
Advisor: David C. Gross, PhD

Abstract:
It is proverbial wisdom that system development success is enhanced by engaging systems engineering early so that the concept considers all aspects of the system lifecycle from operations through ownership, logistics, and eventual disposal. However, the extant literature presents few exemplars of systems engineering’s benefit, specifically in early concept exploration, and fewer still demonstrate the use of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques for such. Within the aerospace domain, drones (or aircraft without any human pilot, crew, or passengers) have emerged in recent years as an exciting new opportunity space in aerospace systems. Drone-based systems have successfully been deployed in missions ranging from shipping and delivery, construction, inspection, and agriculture. This work presents a case study in which MBSE is applied in the development of a system concept for a drone-based system enabling wildlife management. The primary mission explored is the mitigation of wildlife poaching, which is a known issue in driving species to extinction, growth of invasive species, and other ecological harm. Secondary missions included wildlife census and early wildfire identification. The work develops a partial Concept of Operations for a potential system capable of executing these missions including capturing stakeholder’s needs, operations, and functional analysis, and measures of effectiveness and performance. The work also evaluates the resulting Concept of Operations’ quality for the next steps in system development.

Title of presentation: A Study of the Effect of Traffic Flow and Volume on Entry Control Point Delay Times
Presenter: Jeffrey Barr
Advisor: David C. Gross, PhD

Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to understand the causes of traffic backlog when entering secure facilities, during peak arrival times (usually in the morning) and to make practical suggestions for reducing entry time and congestion at the entry point. Improving the flow of traffic onto a secure facility will improve security, reducing the risk of an attack that is either hidden in the traffic or meant to destroy the traffic.  It will add to the quality of the employee's work life, easing the frustration of waiting in line to get to work.

Title of presentation: Virtual Tabletops’ Effects on Board Gamer Performance and Satisfaction
Presenter: Ryan Close
Advisor: David C. Gross, PhD

Abstract:
Online boardgames have become a popular surrogate for the in-person tabletop experience, particularly in more recent times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An interesting aspect of many online boardgames is that visual and auditory interactions are not present, which are defining features of the tabletop experience. In this study, the researchers explore potential impacts of this shift from in-person tabletop gaming to online virtual experiences and the tradeoff between the two in terms of gaming performance and satisfaction in the experience with added convenience and eliminated visual and auditory communication. The researchers hypothesize that the loss of visual and auditory communication during the gaming experience will both reduce perceived enjoyment of the gaming experience and reduce the ability of participants to identify opponent strategy and deception thus negatively impacting performance. Participants will play a chosen board game (Diplomacy) in-person and online, retrospectively capturing performance and satisfaction measures via survey in order to test the hypotheses.

Title of presentation: A Digital Solution to Enhance Physical Security of ATM Users
Presenter: Stephanie Wilson
Advisor: David C. Gross, PhD

Abstract:
According to author Ambre Iven, ATM crimes are classified into three major categories: machine theft and vandalism, robberies, and electronic attacks. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) annual Bank Crimes statistics report shows that between 2016 and 2021, annual ATM-related crimes went from 50 to 254. Historically financial institutions are more concerned with ATM theft/vandalism and ATM electronics over ATM robberies. This lack of interest on the topic of ATM users physical security has made the discussion of physical security of ATM users an imminent topic. Thus, ATM physical security is the basis on which this research paper was developed. From a human factors perspective, this research investigates the problem of physical attacks on ATM users, develops a hypothesis, and proposes a solution to the problem. The research problem statement is: why have ATM robberies not reduced over the years despite innovative security measures? Looking into the matter, it seems the unchanged relatively long and lonely time spent at ATM is the reason why ATM robberies have not reduced, as it is the perfect condition for attack on ATM user. With this in mind, it is proposed that by reducing the service time of users at the ATM terminal, the number of cases of ATM user attack at ATM points may reduce. As a result, the rising ATM crime rate may drop. To achieve this task, an attempt will be made to transfer the bulk of ATM operations to a mobile banking app, leaving only the physical withdrawal and deposit, along with a quick security checkpoint, as the only tasks necessary at the ATM. This will give crime perpetrators little or no time to commit their crime. This proposed solution is yet to be implemented, and as such, a confirmation or rejection of the hypothesis has not been reached.
