abstract: 'With a significant casualty count every year, sickle cell disease is an issue that is taking the lives of many people around the globe. Hence, understanding the molecular structure and experimenting with different methods of treatment could eventually end the suffering of millions. Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to take the shape of a crescent moon due to the production of abnormal hemoglobin molecules. It mostly affects the areas in and around Africa, the Middle East, Southeastern Asia, and the Mediterranean areas. The goal of my research is to inform and spread awareness about sickle cell disease. I am conducting an in-depth literature review, and I intend to search for and combine information from credible sources that discuss sickle cell disease. Some of such credible databases include the National Library of Medicine, Science Direct, and Radiological Society of North America. A 3D printed model of the gene will be included. I expect my research to spread awareness of how deadly sickle cell disease is and hopefully inspire organizations to conduct more in-depth research and experimentation regarding the treatment of sickle cell disease in affected populations.
