Description of Major
Civil engineers have a primary role in creating the “built environment” and in protecting the “natural environment.” They plan, design, construct, and operate buildings, highways, airports, pipelines, bridges, dams and levees, irrigation works, water supply systems, wastewater treatment system, and various other components of the built environment. The scope of civil engineering also includes responsibilities for environmental and social impacts, which have taken on greater importance as our society has learned to articulate its concerns about urban problems, environmental quality, energy, and improvement of the quality of life. Civil Engineering emphasizes all aspects of civil engineering practice including structural analysis/design, geotechnical, transportation, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources, and the management of all waste streams.
Environmental Engineering: Environmental Engineering is currently a major within the Civil Engineering BS degree. Therefore, the diploma will say BS in Civil Engineering. This major focuses primarily on environmental engineering, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources, and the management of all waste streams. As an environmental engineer you will help prevent and solve environmental Problems and may be involved in many public works projects funded by the federal, state and municipal governments, as well as those in the private sector.
ABET
The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) requires that all students graduating from an ABET-accredited program meet certain requirements. Completion of the A.A. degree will not meet these requirements. Prospective majors should select courses after consulting an advisor.
Prerequisite Coursework
Students must complete the following prerequisites required for admission in preparation for the upper division major. Students are encouraged to complete these in the freshman and sophomore years. All may also apply to other requirements.

Pre-Engineering Program Requirements:
All students are placed in a Pre-Major Engineering code until all of the prerequisites have been completed. Students must earn a grade of "C minus" or better on the first attempt of the courses designated in our Pre-Engineering curriculum (Calculus I, Calculus II, General Physics I with calculus*, Pre-Engineering Lab) at any institution attended. One repeated attempt out of all pre-engineering courses is permitted.
* Students who wish to major in Chemical or Biomedical Engineering shall replace Physics I with General Chemistry I for their Pre-Engineering sequence.
Admissions Requirements
Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division:
To be admitted, students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with an FSU GPA of a 2.00, including at least one-half of the required hours in the General Education program, including all of the Area I English and math. In addition, the following requirements must be met: a grade of "C minus" or better in MAC2311. Students must not be in violation of the pre-engineering program requirements.
Transfer Requirements:
Students wishing to transfer into the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering must meet the following criteria:
- Must earn a grade of "C minus" or better on the first attempt of the courses designated in the Pre-Engineering curriculum (Calculus I, Calculus II, General Physics I with calculus*, Pre-Engineering Lab) at any institution attended. One repeated attempt out of all pre-engineering courses is permitted. (* students who wish to major in Chemical or Biomedical Engineering shall replace Physics I with General Chemistry I for their Pre-Engineering sequence).
- Transfer students who have one repeated attempt in one of the pre-engineering courses, must have already completed all pre-engineering courses (excluding Pre-Engineering Lab) prior to transferring to the College of Engineering.
- Transfer students who will earn an AA or have more than 60 hours of transfer credit prior to enrollment at the College must have completed at least Calculus I. It is strongly preferred that AA transfer students have the majority of the pre-engineering courses completed before arriving (excluding Pre-Engineering Lab).
Coursework
A program of study consisting of one hundred twenty-eight semester hours is required for the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in civil engineering. A candidate for the Bachelor's degree is required to earn a "C" or higher in all engineering courses, and must achieve a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in all of the civil engineering major courses (with prefix CGN, CES, ENG, CWR, EES, ENV, TTE, CCE). In addition, students must achieve a grade of "C–" or higher in all courses transferred into the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Students should contact the Department for the most up-to-date information concerning the civil engineering curriculum requirements.
There are two majors within the civil engineering Bachelor's degree program, they are Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Most of the curriculum is common to both majors, and includes topics in lCoreFSU, mathematics, basic science, general engineering science, and civil engineering science and design. History/social science and humanities/fine arts electives are to be selected to satisfy the FSU CoreFSU requirement or the FAMU general education requirement.
