There is little doubt that the Legacy of Lincoln is summed up in the word leadership. Consistently ranked as one of the top U.S. Presidents due to his leadership abilities, Lincoln solidified his legacy as the 16th President of the United States, but it did not start there. He navigated adversity throughout his life, from the loss of his mother at a young age, to business failures and political losses as he pursued his multiple careers. Most famous for things like the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln built the foundations of his legacy at a young age with personal traits such as honesty, empathy, humility, perseverance, and intellect. He was outspoken in the face of adversity, basked in humility, and was empathetic in a time where empathy was scarce.
This presentation will examine how these traits helped build Lincoln into the man he was, and dives deeper into his motivations that were foundationally built on his history as a Christian, husband, father, businessman, politician, and most importantly, a man of the people.

Abstract:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), the 32nd President of the United States, demonstrated profound leadership. FDR was born into an affluent family yet faced personal adversities, such as his battle with polio. Despite these personal challenges, he pursued a political career serving as a New York State Senator, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and later as President of the United States for four terms. FDR's presidential legacy of leading the nation through the Great Depression and World War II showcased his nuanced leadership style. Empathy, resilience, effective communication, and collaborative internationalism were key traits that defined his presidency. His sense of empathy was evident by the New Deal, policies aimed at relieving the suffering of ordinary Americans. His trait of resilience, as demonstrated in his battle with polio, inspired American citizens in both their personal and patriotic duties during uncertain times. Effective communication was displayed through his public speeches and broadcasted fireside chats, which fostered transparency and a sense of shared purpose with the American public. Internationally, he pursued alliances with other democratic countries in the Lend-Lease Act and his vision for the United Nations. From Todd Henry's "The Motivation Code," FDR possessed the visionary motivation to "make an impact." FDR challenged the status quo with bold legislative reforms and demonstrated a leap-first mindset by innovating economic recovery strategies that guided the country out of the Great Depression. His ability to influence a variety of different movements with the character traits discussed above was evident in connecting with the American people, preventing a banking collapse, and shaping the framework for a new world order post-World War II.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born on July 18, 1918, in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, which was then a part of South Africa's Thembuland, is one of the most renowned individuals in the global fight for equality and human rights. Mandela, who is always referred to as "Madiba" an isiXhosa word meaning “father”, had a life that embodies the unbreakable spirit of fortitude, justice, and leadership (Boehmer, 2023). Growing up in a South Africa where apartheid, a system of institutionalized discrimination and racial segregation was deeply ingrained , Mandela's early years were shaped by the harsh reality of systematic injustice. Title of presentation: Osceola: Leadership Through Reciprocity
Presenter:  Stephanie Wilson
Advisor:  Dr. Daniel Georgiadis

Abstract:

Almost every group of humans eventually finds itself with a leader. However, the role of that leader and the interactions with the followers depends of the paradigm of the culture from which that leader arises. Osceola was a Seminole leader and warrior during the Second Seminole War who rose to a leadership position because of his demonstration of reciprocity. (Wickman, 2006) Reciprocity is a fundamental aspect of Seminole culture, which states that all things are connected. This includes the people, animals, plants, water, and land itself. (Ferguson, 2021) Reciprocity has also been called the original law and it requires members of a society to uphold their responsibilities to maintain a sustainable relationship with all things. (Whittle, 2020)
This poster will describe the fundamental aspects of reciprocity and delve into how the embodiment of this principle applies to leadership. Reciprocity is a different paradigm from the Western paradigm and therefore Osceola’s leadership is different from many American leaders. The dominant American culture values individual accomplishments and a general sense of competition. Reciprocity, on the other hand, is a sense of obligation to your people, humanity as a whole, the natural world, and the land. (Darlington, 2003)

The purpose of this study is to see what the reaction time is for a human occupant to react to overriding a level 2 and level 3 autonomous vehicle decision. It will focus on how reaction time changes based on the type of distraction that the user is facing such as reading a book, playing a mobile game, etc.. The findings will help to drive suggestions for autonomous vehicle manufacturers to communicate with vehicle occupants to make them more aware while on the road.

Title of presentation: Human Factors in Traffic Management Systems
Presenter:  Kady Riddle and Lon Schell
Advisor:  Dr. David Gross

Abstract:

The purpose of this project is to evaluate various aspects of the installation of non-traditional traffic management systems (i.e., roundabout) as it relates to human factors. The two main aspects being evaluated include (1) generation of user stress until acclimated to traffic management system, and (2) impact on traffic incidents. Various evaluation methods are going to be utilized throughout this project including but not limited to: surveys, observation of users in roundabouts, and literature review.

Title of presentation: Evaluating Decision Accuracy Between Online and In-Person Complex Decision Making
Presenter:  Andre' Evans, Phillip Sowders, and Chibuzo Ibemere
Advisor:  Dr. David Gross

Abstract

One assumption related to digital-twin computer visualization is that people who make strategic decisions viewing online data are faster and more accurate than strategic decision makers who make the same decisions in person. As a result, strategic decision makers are expected to have a higher degree of accuracy and quicker response time when confronted with a strategic decision online versus a person given a strategic decision in-person, given the decision is of equal, or like, complexity. With the introduction of digital twins, augmented reality, virtual reality, and real-time data analytics, is this assumption true? That is, when a complex decision of equal value is presented to a user in an on-line versus an in-person environment, is the accuracy of their combined decisions any different? If so, can the data be extrapolated to suggest success rates for other scenarios like perhaps the effectiveness of a fighter jet air-to-ground missile strike compared to a drone air-to-ground missile strike? In more general terms, is a computer visualization of an operational digital twin more advantageous when it comes to strategic decision making versus a similar strategic operational decision being made in person?

The purpose of this paper is to determine if there is any variation between online strategic decision making versus in-person strategic decision making and to measure and evaluate the accuracy of online and in-person decision making during a game of chess.
