The Integrated Technology Club at Holy Nativity Episcopal School in Panama City, part of FSU Panama City’s ASCENT program, was one of only three teams in the recent State Championship that will proceed to the international competition in May.

ASCENT is a 10-year, $23 million project partially funded by Triumph Gulf Coast Inc. designed to strengthen Northwest Florida’s regional workforce in cybersecurity and emerging technologies. Through ASCENT, FSU Panama City develops and delivers education, training and industry-recognized certifications that prepare students and professionals for career entry and advancement in high-demand fields.

One of those pathways is by establishing Integrated Technology Clubs at area K-12 schools, offering summer camps and after-school programs to interest students in STEM fields.

The top 55 robotics teams in the state participated in the championships on Feb. 21. The Robo-Bolts, Holy Nativity’s middle school First LEGO Robotics team, received a finalist award for its Innovation Project and earned a slot at the Western Edge International Invitational in Long Beach, Calif., on May 29-31.

“We are so proud to represent our school, ITC, the Northwest Florida region and our state at this event,” said Jan Dykes, the dean of the Holy Nativity Upper School. “I’m now working to secure sponsorships and support to help meet the considerable cost of participating in this event.”

The $2,000 entry fee, combined with cross-country travel expenses, lodging, meals and other costs will exceed the school’s typical reserves, Dykes said. She added, “We are committed to having every student participate, regardless of financial circumstance.”

ITCs in Bay County receive technology and other funding support through ASCENT’s partner, the St Joe Community Foundation, said Brianne Biddle, assistant director of Youth Programs. However, that funding doesn’t cover costs associated with travel.

Anyone interested in helping to support the team may reach Dykes at 850-896-1807. For more information about ASCENT, visit pc.fsu.edu/ascent.
