U.S. Army Capt. Jeremiah McMillian, a master’s degree-seeking student at FSU Panama City, was recently recognized as a Salute to Heroes award recipient by the American Red Cross North Carolina Region.

McMillian is a student in the Law Enforcement Intelligence program.

The award recognizes his commitment to the Army, his community, and the values that first motivated him after 9/11, when he was only 12 years old.

“I thought the world was ending that day,” McMillian told a reporter with WXII TV news in Winston-Salem, N.C., when he received the award. “But I knew that from then on, I wanted to help people. I didn't know what it would be, but I was always passionate about police, law enforcement and the military."

After graduating from Surry Central High School in 2007, he enlisted in the Army in 2013. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 2017 and got his master's from East Carolina University in 2022. He plans to earn a second master's and then a doctorate from FSU and achieve the rank of colonel by the time he hits his 50s.

McMillian has been in Missouri for captain's training since May of this year. In December, when he turns 38, McMillian will be deployed to the same base in Kuwait where an Iranian drone strike claimed the first American lives in the current conflict.
