Parkinson’s disease symposium, documentary film coming to FSU Panama City

Florida State University Panama City will host a Parkinson’s Symposium in September, featuring a screening of the documentary movie, “On Firm Ground.” The event is free to attend and open to the public.

The symposium is designed for members of local support groups, healthcare providers and the general public to learn about the latest Parkinson’s disease research. The event will include featured speakers addressing real-life Parkinson’s issues; discussion of improved techniques for treating Parkinson’s; and new therapies aimed at slowing its progression.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, there are about 1 million people in the U.S. currently living with Parkinson’s disease, with another 90,000 diagnosed each year.

“On Firm Ground” is the true story of two people battling Parkinson’s disease who embark on a journey of hope as they undergo brain surgery to reclaim their lives. The symposium and film screening will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, in the Holley Academic Center at FSU Panama City, 4750 Collegiate Drive, Panama City. Vendors and resources for individuals and families battling Parkinson’s disease will also be on site, and food and beverages will be available.
