Title of presentation: Skill Profiles of an ELL Reader: Variant Vowels
Presenter: McKenzie Pantoja
Advisor: Dr. Aimee Frier
Abstract:
This case study features a third-grade ELL (English Language Learner) literacy skills analysis, along with an intervention sequence designed to address reading skills needed to individualize explicit instruction. Assessments were administered to determine the explicit skills needed for a student's success. The ELL student featured in this case had a good understanding of decoding skills, with variant vowels being a target for intervention. Changes from the pre- to post-test suggest that the ELL students can acquire knowledge of variant vowels with explicit decoding instruction.

Abstract:
The case study features a fourth-grade English Language Learner who was assessed to determine their language and reading skills. The student was given assessments to determine which skills are yet to be mastered and what intervention is necessary. The case study includes an individualized intervention plan that was chosen based on the results of several assessments including the CORE Phonics Assessment and the Words Their Way Spelling Screener. Research suggests explicit phonics instruction will positively influence students’ reading and comprehension skills. Impacts of individualized Instruction in inflectional endings will be shared.
