Federal regulations at 8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(i) define Curricular Practical Training (CPT), as “alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship/practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.” A Designated Student Officer (DSO)* student advisor can authorize CPT for a program “that is an integral part of an established curriculum.”
F-1 Students should apply for authorization for unpaid or paid internships or similar opportunities.
If you hold F-1 nonimmigrant status and have an opportunity for an internship, practicum, research, or field study that is integral to your academic program and for which you will earn academic credit, you may be eligible for CPT authorization. If you have an employment opportunity that is directly related to your major field of study but is not curricular, does not carry appropriate credit, or is not offered by a sponsoring employer through the FSU Career Center, the employment is optional, not curricular, and requires authorization through Optional Practical Training (OPT). For more information about OPT please contact your DSO.
