FSU Panama City’s STEM Institute will host students from West Bay and Beach elementary schools during “SURGE: Students Understanding the Research and Groundwork of Experiments” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan 25, 2017, in the FSU Panama City Holley Academic Center.

With the assistance of FSU elementary education students, students will rotate among activities that reinforce Next-Generation Sunshine State Science Standards and pique their curiosity in STEM-related fields.

Students will learn about STEM careers and interact with STEM professionals from FSU Panama City, Gulf Coast State College, and Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division. Sessions will include rocketry with John Hansel, a retired Navy Base engineer; microscopy with Dr. John Smith, an FSU biology instructor and entomologist; unmanned aerial vehicles with Jose Lopez-Baquero, a GCSC instructor; and origami with Akiko Nakamura, a GCSC instructor.

The event is sponsored by the FSU STEM Institute, Gulf Coast State College and Bay District Schools.
