Local Students Take Flight During AT&T Foundation "Up in the Air" 2013 STEM Camp at FSU Panama City

Florida State University Panama City STEM Institute concludes its Summer STEM Camps this week, July 8 through 12, with the AT&T Foundation Advanced STEM Camp for area rising high school juniors and seniors being one of the learning opportunities offered.

The Florida State University Panama City STEM Institute is holding its Advanced Summer STEM Camp this week, July 8 through 12, for rising high school juniors and seniors through funding from the AT&T Foundation. Thirty high school students from Bay and Washington Counties are enrolled in this week’s camp. These exemplary students are engaged in learning and practicing STEM skills as they relate to communications and aviation. The AT&T Foundation Camp will culminate in a flight mission at Mowat Middle School on Friday, July 13 at 8:30 a.m.

During the AT&T Foundation Advanced STEM camp, students are working with Florida State engineering students to experience the kinds of learning that takes place in college engineering courses. Students are building remote-controlled airplanes and studying the physics of flight.  Later this week they will utilize electrical engineering to add components to their aircraft that will allow them to complete their mission on Friday. Working with educators, pilots and electrical engineers, the AT&T Foundation students are learning the intricacies of melding many skill sets to create an aircraft capable of not only flying, but also performing a predetermined task.

The AT&T Foundation awarded $50,000 to the FSU Panama City STEM Institute in the fall of 2012 to establish this year’s AT&T Foundation Advanced STEM Camp, to cover expenses related to the camp and to provide equipment to be utilized in this and future camps. The goal of the camp is to provide motivation and opportunities for students to get excited about becoming future STEM professionals.

"We at AT&T appreciate the ability to give back in this innovative way that really inspires children in our own community,” said Ray Walker, Regional Director, AT&T Florida. “We are pleased to be able to support  Florida State University Panama City in giving these children a fun, educational and motivating experience."

“Educating our students to the highest level possible requires the active involvement of all stakeholders,” said Ginger Littleton, Executive Director of the FSU Panama City STEM Institute.  “AT&T has always been a highly involved partner in this important endeavor. It is exciting to see their commitment realized this week at the high school camp.”
