Students get glimpse at career outlook
Modeled after speed dating, the career exploration event allowed students to pass between major-specific representatives in 12-minute increments. More than 25 industry professionals offered their expertise on career outlook, job descriptions and requirements.
Katie Hoskins, a Recreation Tourism & Events major who expects to graduate this summer, said networking face to face was a highlight of the event.
“You can Google a company all day long, but you don’t really know who they are,” she noted.
Although unconventional, both presenters and students seemed to enjoy the fast-paced format.
“It worked well,” Panama City Police Chief Scott Ervin said. “With the small groups, you get to work more one on one.”
“It was very casual and less stressful,” Hoskins said.
Kevin Elliott, with Kerigan Marketing & Associates, noted the short talks worked well with the younger audience.
“With young people, you have to be quick,” he said. “They don’t need to learn everything now, just a little bit about each career.”
Natasha Allen, a senior Business Administration major, agreed.
“It was straightforward,” she said. “I was able to get the meat of what I need.”
“It just made me think about my options,” noted Alexander Hamlin, a freshman social science major.
The event also included a LinkedIn booth, offering tips on creating an effective profile and an opportunity to take professional profile pictures for the social networking website.
