Spring Fling, elections, adviser on SGC agenda

As former NBA player Michael Jordan once said, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Student Government Council of Florida State University Panama City can make it happen.

The Spring Fling, student elections and the new SGC adviser were discussed at SGC’s third meeting of the semester on Feb. 4.

Representatives want students to be excited about coming to school every day. With events such as Welcome Back Week and Valentine’s Day activities, the spring semester has been a huge success.

Spring Fling is scheduled March 28-31, Special Events Chair Mercedes Ardley said at the meeting. The event typically is a week of activities to help students unwind before final exams. Previous events have included cookouts, games, parties and open mic nights.

The council is looking for more input on events. A recent survey offered feedback on what students would to see on the campus, from food offerings to event suggestions. Some suggestions included drive-in movies, dances and sports tournaments.

The Special Events Committee meets at 12:30 p.m. Mondays in the Barron Commons. All students are welcome to offer suggestions or assistance for the event.

Students also may bring any concerns or requests to the SGC office on the third floor of the Barron Building.

Election Chair TJ Schrier said he is searching for students interested in joining council. Representatives are elected by the FSU Panama City student body and hold a term of three semesters.

Campaigning will be Feb. 22 through March 4. Voting will be March 15-17. More details will follow when election is closer.

The council also welcomed new SGC adviser Michael Smith on Feb. 12. Smith came to FSU Panama City from Florida State’s Tallahassee campus.

The next SGC meeting will be at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the SGC Conference Room, Barron 305.
