FSU Panama City Hosts Mosquito Control Workshop

Erica Martin

Florida State University Panama City is offering a Mosquito Control Workshop, March 20-22, 2012, at the Florida State University Holley Academic Center. This workshop provides mosquito, environmental health, and pest control professionals with unique training to earn State Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

While the Mosquito Control Workshop has a more than 18 year history, this is the first time that it will be held at and coordinated by Florida State University Panama City. The Florida A&M University Public Health Entomology Research and Education Center in Bay County coordinated the workshop until the Center’s closure last year. Former director of the Center, Dr. John Smith, has played a vital role in the workshop over the years and has worked to ensure that the program continued after the Center’s closure. Smith, now a professor of medical/veterinary entomology at Florida State University Panama City, made the continuance of the workshop one of his primary goals. “After the FAMU Center closed, there was a call from the community to continue the workshop,” Smith said. “I am pleased that we are able to continue the tradition here at Florida State University Panama City.”

The Mosquito Control Workshop is geared toward professionals who need CEUs in: Florida Public Health Pest Control, Florida Environmental Health, Florida Aquatic Weed Control, Florida Limited Government Lawn and Ornamental Pesticide Application, Florida CORE and Alabama Public Health and Aquatic Pest Control. These CEU credits are also available for other states.

The Mosquito Control Workshop will have a variety of local, regional and out-of-state speakers as well as breakout sessions including: Mosquito Control Techniques, Pesticide Handing and Use, Calibration, Mosquito Identification, Aquatic Weed Identification and Control, Building a Public Education Program, Mosquito Director Caucus, Commissioner/County Manager Caucus, Integrated Mosquito Control, Program Administration and Certification Training/Testing.

Registration is $300 for the full workshop and $250 for a single day. Registration is available online at http://mosquitoworkshop.fsupc.com.
