PSS Capstone Internships

Learning in Action

Students working toward a degree in Crime Scene, Law Enforcement Intelligence or Law Enforcement Operations have the opportunity to receive valuable work experience while earning academic credit by enrolling in the Capstone Course, CJE 4710. The Capstone Internship Program allows the student to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom in the field. An internship is an excellent way to investigate career possibilities and start building a resume.


To participate in an internship, you must complete the following.

  • Meet all eligibility requirements for the course.
  • Search the internship possibilities, apply and secure an internship.
  • Fulfill all employers' requirements for employment.
  • Complete the Capstone Application (pdf) and submit by the application deadline for the desired semester. Once the application is accepted and processed a permission number will be given for registration in the Capstone Course CJE 4710
  • Meet the University's deadline for fee payment.
  • Work a minimum of 8 hours per week, see Capstone Variable Hours (pdf), for the 16 week semester (12 weeks for Summer).

  • Majoring in Crime Scene investigation, Law Enforcement Intelligence or Law Enforcement Operations.
  • Junior or Senior
  • Have completed three (9 credit hours) of the four core courses with a grade of C- or better.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5

Academic Components

  • Assignments are web based through Blackboard.
  • Journal entries are required weekly to provide information about work tasks completed that week and lessons learned.
  • A final comprehensive paper describing your Capstone experience is due the final week of the course.
  • Instructor will make contact with your workplace supervisor and monitor your progress.

Internship Possibilities

A link is provided with possible internship possibilities within the area of Public Safety and Security. The list is not exhaustive and other agencies may be selected with approval of your course instructor. Employers include a wide variety of agencies and organizations. Past participating organizations have included local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as well as legal firms, private security services, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers.

Requirements vary from agency to agency. Be prepared to complete interviews, psychological exams, physicals, polygraphs, background investigations, and drug screenings. Each agency will determine whether you pass or fail their required tests.

While most internships are unpaid they offer an excellent opportunity to explore your chosen academic field of study with hands on experience that is attractive to future employers and will create contacts in a competitive job market.

In addition, the FSU Career Center offers an Internship Fundthrough the generous support of alumni and friends, the Internship Fund (I.F.) provides financial support to students pursuing experiential learning opportunities.

Students are responsible for contacting the agency, interviewing and meeting any and all requirements for employment. Securing the internship is the student's obligation.
