PSS Academic Performance, Retention and Graduation Requirements

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE and RETENTION

A grade of (C-) or above is required for all courses taken in the major.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

General graduation requirements include:

  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all work attempted.
  • Completion of the Gordon Rule Composition and Mathematics requirements.
  • Completion of the Oral Competency, Computer Skills Competency, and Multicultural course requirements.
  • Satisfaction of the state of Florida's foreign language requirement.
  • Completion at least 27 of the public safety and security credit hours at FSU; completion of 45 hours at the 3000/4000 level; and, completion of the last 30 hours for the degree at FSU.

Additional graduation requirements will depend on whether the student was admitted as an AS-BS student, as an AA transfer student from a Florida public college, as a non-Florida AA transfer student, or as a current student at FSU (either campus). The six extra hours for the AS to BS degree are prescribed by the SBE for articulation from an AS in Criminal Justice Technology to BS in Criminal Justice.

a. Admitted to the articulated AS-BS program

130 total hours are required with 66 hours beyond the specified AS degree requirements. The ten total extra hours for the AS to BS degree (4 extra for AS and 6 extra for BS) are prescribed by the SBE for articulation from an AS in Criminal Justice Technology to BS in Criminal Justice. The post AS credit hours are to be distributed as:

48 credit hours in public safety and security with specific requirements of:

  • 12 hours in core courses
  • 33 hours in additional required courses
  • 3 credit hour integrated capstone course

18 credit hours in liberal studies to complete the 36 hour general education requirement. (Students entering with more than 18 hours of acceptable general education courses will need only complete those necessary to fulfill the 36 required).

b. Admitted with an AA from a Florida public college

120 total hours are required. The post-AA credit hours are to be distributed as:

48 credit hours in public safety and security with specific requirements of:

  • 12 hours in core courses
  • 33 hours in additional required courses
  • 3 credit hour integrated capstone course

12 credit hours in electives approved by the College. These may be unrestricted electives or they may be used for an internship, a certificate in Public Safety and Security, a minor (outside of Public Safety and Security) or as hours applied towards a double major.

c. Admitted as a transfer student

120 total hours are required. The remaining hours are to be distributed as:

48 credit hours in public safety and security with specific requirements of:

  • 12 hours in core courses
  • 33 hours in additional required courses
  • 3 credit hour integrated capstone course

12 credit hours in electives approved by the College. These may be unrestricted electives or they may be used for an internship, a certificate in Public Safety and Security, a minor (outside of Public Safety and Security) or as hours applied towards a double major.

In addition, transfer students must complete FSU's general education requirements (possibly as part of the 12 hours of electives).

d. Current student at FSU (either campus)

Student must have fifty-two or more semester hours of credit, to include six hours of freshman English composition and six hours of mathematics/statistics. Student must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. Student must complete the general education requirements while enrolled in this program.

120 total hours are required. The remaining hours are to be distributed as:

48 credit hours in public safety and security with specific requirements of:

  • 12 hours in core courses
  • 33 hours in additional required courses
  • 3 credit hours integrated capstone course

12 credit hours in electives approved by the College. These may be unrestricted electives or they may be used for an internship, a certificate in Public Safety and Security, a minor (outside of Public Safety and Security) or as hours applied towards a double major.
