PSS Minors Available in Public Safety & Security

Minors offered within the department of Public Safety and Security are listed below and are available to students at both the Tallahassee (online) and the Panama City campuses. Contact person for the program is Tom Kelley, Ph.D. (tkelley@pc.fsu.edu ).

Only coursework with a C- or better will count toward the completion of any minor.

Minor in Crime Scene Investigation

Minor Description: This minor program provides the scientific knowledge needed for a variety of forensic disciplines such as trace, biometric, impression and pattern evidence.  Crime Scene Investigation applies a problem-solving approach to investigations and analysis. A minor in Crime Scene Investigation is a great way to enhance your resume when applying for jobs in a forensic lab, medical examiner’s office or any law enforcement career.

Minor Requirements: The minor in Public Safety and Security, Crime Scene Investigation in the College of Applied Studies requires a minimum of 12 hours from the following required and elective coursework.

Required Courses (7 hours)

  • CJE 3762 (3) Forensic Science in Investigations (offered online and Face to face)
  • CJE 3762L (1) Forensic Science in Investigation Lab (offered online and Face to face)
  • CJE 3648 (3) Crime Scene Professionalism (offered online and Face to face)

Elective Courses (Choose from the following courses to complete a minimum of 5 additional hours)

  • CJE 4655 (1) Crime & Accident Scene Imaging & Reconstruction (offered online)
  • CJE 4135 (2) Impression and Pattern Evidence (offered online and Face to face)
  • CJE 4241 (1) Trace & Biometric Evidence (offered online)
  • CJE 4638 (2) Forensic Death Investigation (offered online and Face to face)

Minor in Law Enforcement Intelligence

Minor Description: This minor assumes an “applications” based focus applying a problem-solving approach to a discipline.  The 3 primary disciplines that apply Intelligence are: National Security, Law Enforcement, and Business. Our curriculum focuses on law enforcement, however, students with a major in Business or a major applicable to National Security (such as modern languages, history, political science, international studies, etc.) may wish to enhance their degree with an Intelligence minor.

Minor Requirements:  The minor in Public Safety and Security, Law Enforcement Intelligence in the College of Applied Studies requires 12 hours of coursework.

 Required Courses (12 hours)

  • CJE 3732 Criminal Intelligence

Plus: any other 3 courses listed within the Law Enforcement Intelligence major (9)

Minor in Law Enforcement Operations

Minor Description:  This minor looks at the field of policing through an application based curriculum. The minor is designed so that the student takes an introductory course, then selects 3 – major specific courses within the LEO curriculum. The goal of this minor is to allow students from varied degree fields to be exposed to the challenges and techniques of modern policing in the United States.

Minor Requirements: The minor in Public Safety and Security, Law Enforcement Operations in the College of Applied Studies requires 12 hours of coursework.

Required Course (12 hours)

  • CCJ 3024 The Criminal Justice System (3) or
  • CCJ 2020 Introduction to Criminal Justice (3)

Plus: any other 3 courses listed within the Law Enforcement Operations major (9)

Minor in Underwater Crime Scene Investigation

Minor Description:  This minor assumes an "applications" focus not present in other existing degree certificates or minors. Courses will be particularly useful in complementing various "professional" degree programs, such as health professions, law, social science, criminology, environmental studies, recreation-tourism-events, engineering and biological science program

Minor Requirements: The minor in Public Safety and Security, Underwater Crime Scene Investigation in the College of Applied Studies requires 12 hours of coursework.
