STEM SUMMER INSTITUTE 2010
The 2010 STEM Summer Institute was held in June at the Florida State University Panama City’s Holley Academic Center. The collaborative effort between the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD), FSU Panama City and Bay, Gulf and Holmes county school districts is an outgrowth of a national initiative by the Department of Defense (DoD) to build and grow future generations of American scientists and engineers.
From June 14 through 18, middle and high school science teachers along with a group of engineers and scientists from NSWC PCD received professional development training in hands-on inquiry and design-based science education using STEM learning/material world modules (MWM) developed by the National Defense Education Program.
Utilizing the new curriculum and training, the teachers challenged teams of students to solve "real world" problems in robotics, science and engineering using the LEGO MINDSTORM robots.
